Broward residents admit to mortgage fraud

WEST PALM BEACH — Two Broward County residents pleaded guilty to mortgage fraud Thursday in federal district court. Both face as much as five years in prison as a result.

Monique Mitchell, 29, of Pembroke Pines, and Sheldon Martin, 34, of Plantation, admitted to falsifying documents used in connection with the sale of a $1.25 million Fort Lauderdale home in 2008.

According to court records, Mitchell was employed by Attorneys Title Center in Pembroke Pines and  Martin was a self-employed licensed mortgage broker in Plantation. Mitchell and Martin admitted that they lied to lenders about the size of the down payment used to buy the Fort Lauderdale home, cash on hand at the closing and money diverted to a Pembroke Pines law firm.

Federal Judge Donald Middlebrooks. Is set to sentence the two on July 21. A third defendants, attorney  Michael Samuda, is scheduled for trial in June.
