john mcenroeDELRAY BEACH — John McEnroe made the score reasonably close, but in the end, on this hot Sunday afternoon, he was no match for Carlos Moya. The defending Delray Beach ITC Champions Tour Champion defeated McEnroe 6-4, 6-4.

“It’s a beautiful day if you’re going to the beach; not so beautiful if you’re down here playing tennis,” McEnroe said. “Carlos is too good.”

If Las Vegas bookmakers would have laid odds on the match, they would have installed Moya as the overwhelming favorite to win if for no other reason than the age difference between the two players. McEnroe is 54; Moya is 36. McEnroe also played a late Saturday night match against Mats Wilander to earn a spot in the finals.

Moya, of Spain, has lost only one set in his two appearances in the Delray tournament, and that was a year ago on his way to defeating Ivan Lendl to win his first title.

Moya underscored the age difference in his comments after the game. “John is somebody I used to watch as a kid. You are one of my idols.”

“He has a tricky game,” Moya said during a post-match news conference. “It’s not easy to play him. And it was a bit windy. He serves well and has got great volleys. He doesn’t allow you a lot of rhythm and plays very flat, something that I’m not very used to. But he’s fun to watch and fun to play.”

Moya said he’s having fun on the Champions Tour, and will continue to play “as long as they want me.”

Earlier in the afternoon, Boca Raton resident Aaron Krickstein defeated Sweden’s Mats Wilander 4-6, 7-5 (10-5) to take third place. Wilander, a 2002 International Hall of Fame inductee, received his Hall of Fame ring in a ceremony before the match. That ceremony was scheduled for Saturday night before Wilander’s match with McEnroe but an hour- long rainstorm forced a postponement.
