City Furniture plans Broward, Palm Beach expansion
By Palm Beach Business.com
MIAMI — City Furniture has launched a $17.5 million expansion program that includes building or renovating five stores from Miami to West Palm Beach.
City Furniture President Keith Koenig said the expansion, which include both the City Furniture and Ashley Furniture brands, will create more than 75 permanent jobs by early 2013, and will provide work for several hundred construction workers.
“We’re confident in South Florida’s future,” Koenig said. “We’ve been acquiring properties for this expansion for the last few years, and while it may seem we’re going against the economic tide, the timing is right. “We’re seeing increases in year-over-year sales, plus well-timed opportunities to dramatically increase sales at proven locations.”
Koenig announced plans to build on the success of his company’s City Furniture/Ashley Furniture super store concept. City Furniture holds the Ashley Furniture license in southeast and southwest Florida, and has opened adjoining stores offering the two brands in Boca Raton, Stuart, Wellington, Fort Myers and Naples.
Each store will be designed to meet “green” standards and earn LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, Koenig said.
Expansion plans include:
— Demolishing the former Modernage furniture on Federal Highway in Oakland Park, and building a $3 million, 25,000-square-foot Ashley Furniture store. Work will begin in spring, with completion by year’s end.
— Building a $4 million Ashley Furniture HomeStore adjacent to the City Furniture store at 2121 Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard in West Palm Beach. The stores’ interiors will connect. Work is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2012, with completion in early 2013. When the store is completed, City Furniture will close a leased Ashley Furniture store on Okeechobee Blvd.
The furniture retailer currently operates 14 City Furniture and nine Ashley Furniture HomeStore locations in Southeast and Southwest Florida. Growing “smarter and greener” as it reconfigures its network, the company has increased sales this year despite closing three stores in late 2010. For information: www.cityfurniture.com.
