Delray Beach Public Library goes green
By Palm Beach Business.com
The Delray Beach Public Library Library has instituted several new measures in order to become more eco-friendly, including using recycled paper and gradually replacing incandescent lighting with energy-efficient LED and fluorescent lighting both inside and out.
Other measures include using rechargeable batteries whenever possible. Americans throw out about 179,000 tons of batteries per year. The problem isn't just the amount of the waste but the mercury, lead and other toxic chemicals that batteries contain.
The library also has stopped using plastic bags for patron’s books, instead selling canvas bags for $1.50 each, including tax.
The library also encourages their patrons to check out DVD’s and CD’s instead of buying them. One hundred thousand DVDs and CDs are thrown away each month. Why contribute to the trash pile?
