DELRAY BEACH — The flags were there. The food and the music were there. And of course the fireworks were there.
In fact, it was a pretty traditional Fourth of July celebration as tens of thousands jammed Delray’s beach district to celebrate the nation’s birthday on a picture perfect South Florida day. Rain had dampened the city’s last three Fourths, Mayor Woodie McDuffie noted.
There was one major change: the fireworks were shot from the north end of the municipal beach instead of from a barge offshore. The change eliminated last year’s problem of ash and debris from spent rockets falling on the crowd. It also saved the city about $29,000 in rental fees for the barge.
There was one surprise: There was a drawing for a stay at Crane’s Beach House. The winners: Benjamin Occelin and Melissa Ann Finley. That wasn’t the surprise. What happened after the two were called to the stage to accept their prize was: Occelin, on bended knee, proposed to Finley.
Finley acceted.
McDuffie offered his services to officiate at their wedding.
“How long areyou guys going to wait?” McDuffie asked. “From the looks of it, not long.”
Delray Beach resident Cynthia DeLeon joins the throng along East Atlantic Avenue.
