Resurfacing work expected to create major delays on Turnpike

FORT LAUDERDALE — One of two southbound lanes on Florida’s Turnpike will be closed most of this weekend north and south of 45th Street in Palm Beach County, and major delays are anticipated.

The lane closure is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, and continue through 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 24.

The closure is needed to allow workers to resurface a section of the highway and make repairs. The work is part of a $1.8 million project to replace the asphalt pavement, replace bridge expansion joints, and perform various repairs and safety upgrades.

Delray Beach to distribute free ITC tickets

DELRAY BEACH — The city of Delray Beach once again will partner with the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships to offer free  grandstand seating tickets to all ITC matches. One hundred tickets per session, or a maximum of 200 tickets per day, will be offered to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. The ITC will be held from Feb. 22 through March 3 at the Delray Beach Tennis Center, 201 West Atlantic Avenue. 

Please note that complimentary tickets are limited to two tickets per person per day, either for the day or evening session. Tickets will be distributed in the lobby of Delray Beach City Hall, 100 NW 1st Avenue, between 8 and 10 a.m. Tickets for weekend matches will be available on the Friday before.

 

Northbound turnpike to close for testing

FORT LAUDERDALE — All northbound lanes on Florida’s Turnpike between Commercial Boulevard (Exit 62) in Broward County and Okeechobee Boulevard (Exit 99) in Palm Beach County will close to traffic from 12:01 to 4 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 3, for Florida Gas Transmission to conduct tests along the Turnpike right of way.

All northbound traffic will be directed to exit the Turnpike at Commercial Boulevard, and will follow a detour east to I-95, north to Okeechobee Boulevard and then west to get back to the Turnpike.

Should retesting of the gas line become necessary, the road closure and detour also will take place from 12:01 to 4 a.m. Tuesday, Feb.5.

Electronic signs will be in place to advise the public about the closure and detour. Motorists may dial 5-1-1 for real-time traffic information or visit www.FL511.com before traveling. They may also follow @fl511_turnpike on Twitter.

Unity of Delray to offer music appreciation course

DELRAY BEACH — Zach Coblens, the music director at Unity of Delray, will offer a four-week music appreciation course at the church beginning Jan. 27. The course, free and open to the public, will cover a bit of the Renaissance and the Baroque and Classical periods. Each session will last two hours beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Coblens will have multimedia presentations incorporating artwork from the period with the music, showing similarities between the visual and the music of the time. Students will receive a printed guide to the course. Listening and discussion, as well as some lecturing, will all be a part of these classes. Another four-week course will follow this spring and will cover the Romantic and Contemporary periods.

Karen Granger named interim president of the Delray Chamber

DELRAY BEACH — Karen Granger has been named interim president of the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce. Granger joined the chamber in November 2011 as vice president. She has been a resident of South Palm Beach County for 24 years, worked at Levenger in public relations and marketing, and at the West Palm Beach law firm of Gunster Yoakley.  She also owned her own public relations business.

Delray Library offers wine education seminar

DELRAY BEACH — Are you confused by wine? Do you know how to read a wine label? What type of wine goes with specific dishes? These questions and many more will be answered at the Delray Beach Public Library wine education class Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. 

Join Bob Burchill, aka “The Wine Guy,” in a discussion on how to navigate your way through the sometimes overwhelming world of wine. Learn how to choose, serve, taste and enjoy wine. The class is designed to appeal to everyone from the wine novice to the connoisseur. Intermediate and advanced wine topics will also be discussed. The program is open to the public and registration is not required.

 

Delray Beach ITC looking for ball kids

DELRAY BEACH — The Delray Beach International Tennis Championships is seeking ball kids for the 2013 tournament held Feb. 22 – March 3 at the Delray Beach Tennis Center.

Ballkids must be 12-years-old and are required to attend training sessions and work the matches on Saturday, Feb. 23 or Sunday, Feb. 24. Ball kids who work at least three main draw sessions will receive consideration to work the semifinals and finals.

Ball kids receive uniforms, meals during working sessions, as well as match tickets for families and friends. Interested individuals should call the tournament office at 561-330-6000 or e-mail for more info.

Local artists featured at Delray Library

DELRAY BEACH — Two local artists are being featured for the next two months at the Delray Beach Public Library, located at 100 West Atlantic Avenue. mixed media art work of Adrienne Walker and photography of Dr. Kristin Olson Murtaugh will be on display at the library’s 2nd floor Gallery through March 30.

Walker has titled her exhibit “Art by Adrienne.” She has been involved in art and music for her entire life. She majored in music in college, taught piano and studied painting and sculpting throughout the United States and Europe. Her work is in many homes throughout the United States and she is a board member and Treasurer of the Palm Beach Watercolor Society. The exhibit features people, places and things.

Murtaugh has titled her exhibit “Here & There.” She has studied photography in New York at Parsons College and with photographer Mauro Marinelli. Before moving to Florida her work was exclusively in black and white, but since 1992 she has expanded her work in color and her subject matter has broadened to capture the world around her.  Her photographs feature both black and white and color and focus on form, pattern and texture.

France's Monfils commits to Delray Beach International Tennis Championships

DELRAY BEACH — Gael Monfils of France has committed to play in the ATP World Tour portion of the Delray Beach ITC. Monfils is a former world No. 7 who is playing his way back from a knee injury that sidelined him for more than three months in 2012.

Monfils joins a field that includes four players currently ranked in the top 20 along and five former ITC champions. The Top 20 players includes John Isner (No. 13), Marin Cilic (No. 14), Kei Nishikori (No. 18) and Alexandr Dolgopolov (No. 20). The former champions include Kevin Anderson (2012), Mardy Fish (2009), Tommy Haas (2006) and Xavier Malisse (2005 & 2007). Nishikori was the 2008 ITC winner.

Monfils, 26, has won four ATP titles and has three late-round Grand Slam finishes to his credit. He reached the 2008 French Open semifinals as well as the quarterfinal rounds of the 2009 French Open and the 2010 US Open. In 2011, the Frenchman was ranked in the Top 10 for 32 straight weeks.

Dolgopolov is also making his first appearance in the Delray Beach field. The 24-year-old Kiev, Ukraine, resident won two ATP titles over the last two seasons, and reached No. 13 in the world last year. He was an Australian Open quarterfinalist in 2011.

The tournament begins Feb. 2 and runs through March 3.

Other notables in the field include Feliciano Lopez, a member of Spain’s Davis Cup winners in 2008 and 2009; Marinko Matosesvic, the 2012 ITC runner-up; and 20-year-old American Ryan Harrison.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church recognized by Habitat for Humanity

DELRAY BEACH — Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County has presented its first annual Community Servant Award to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Delray Beach for its efforts to provide affordable housing in the South County region.

Habitat’s mission is to provide affordable homes for low-income families in Boca Raton, Boynton Beach and Delray Beach. Recipients partner with Habitat, helping to build their homes and others, while paying an interest-free mortgage.

For the past year-and-a-half, St. Paul’s has opened its parish hall to Habitat and prospective homeowners for monthly pre-purchase education classes that Habitat conducts to ensure that prospective homeowners are successful once they complete the program.

Cloud 10 to open Delray blow-dry bar

DELRAY BEACH — Hairstyling firm Cloud 10 will open in mid-February the largest blow dry bar in Florida on the ground floor of Worthing Place at the corner of Atlantic and 2nd Avenues in Delray Beach.  Shortly thereafter, Cloud 10 will open up in Mizner Plaza in Boca Raton.

"There will be no cutting and no coloring," Cloud 10 Founder Jodi Dery said. "Just wash, dry and beautify at both locations!"

Blow dry bars are the latest trend in the beauty salon business, Dery said, catering to women who want to have their hair washed, blown out and styled in less than an hour for $35 to $40.

Cloud 10 will provide complimentary champagne and wine. Customers will have their hair shampooed in a Shiatsu massage chair. Each station will have an iPad so customers can selct what to read or watch, and charging console for charging all types of cell phones.

Both the Delray Beach and Boca Raton stores will open at 7 a.m. and close daily at 9 p.m.
