DELRAY BEACH — Grigor Dimitrov admitted afterward that he didn't have his best stuff Wednesday evening during his second round match with Damir Dzumhur at the Delray Beach Open. Still, what he had was good enough to beat Dzhumhur of Bosnia 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Dimitrov is now the highest remaining seed in the ATP World Tour event at No. 4. He plays Adrian Mannarino in the semifinals 12:30 Friday afternoon on the stadium court of the Delray Beach Tennis Center. Mannarino is the eighth seed.
“Overall, my game was very poor today," Dimitrov said afterward." That’s just the way it is, to be honest about it.
"All credit to (Dzhumhur)."
The match started off like it would be easy for Dimitrov, but it turned quickly after he had taken a 4-1 lead in the first set. Dzhumher took the final five games of the set.
Dimitrov said part of his problem was adjusting to how the Delray court plays at night. He played his opening match Monday afternoon. His Wednesday match began at 6 p.m., and conditions began to change as the sun went down and the typical daytime winds that sweep the court died down. He had to adjust, and he did.
"I found a way," Dimitrov said. "A win is a win."
Earlier in the day, Rajeev Ram of the United States defeated Illya Marchenko of Ukraine, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. On Monday, Ram beat Bernard Tomic of Australia, the tournament's seond seed.
Also, France's Mannarino defeated qualifier Tatsuma Ito of Japan 7-6(6), 6-7(4), 6-3, and Benjamin Becker of Germany beat Steve Johnson of the United States, the tournament's six seed, 5-7, 7-6(1), 6-3.
In doubles play, the Bryan brothers, Mike and Bob of the United States, beat Australians John Millman and John Patrick Smith 6-3, 6-4. The Bryans are attempting to win Delray for the third consecutive year. They've won the tournament four times.
