Dr. Dorothy Murray honored for years of service

Murray, a physician at Hospice by the Sea, has been honored for her long career and continued service by both the city of Boca Raton and the The Boca Raton Women’s Club at the 12th annual Honor Your Doctor Luncheon held recently  at the Boca West Country Club.

At the event, Boca Raton Mayor, Susan Whelchel, Mayor Whelchel read a special proclamation declaring March 24 as “Dr. Dorothy M. Murray Day” The proclamation also noted that Dr. Murray is the first woman physician to be honored with the People’s Choice Award.  Whelchel then presented Dr. Murray with the 2010 Doctor of Distinction Award from the Women’s Club of Boca Raton.  

Murray is a pioneer in medicine, and has provided quality care to patients for more than 43 years.  Her career includes 25 years at the Boca Raton Community Hospital ,where she was medical staff president from 1984 to1986 — the only female physician to have held this role. 
Murray also served on the consulting staff of several local hospitals.  From July 1972 to June 1976 she was on the staff of the Catholic Medical Centers of Brooklyn & Queens Hospitals in New York.  

Although Dr. Murray retired from her practice in 1998, she continues to provide compassionate care to patients at Hospice by the Sea in both Palm Beach and Broward counties.

The Honor Your Doctor Luncheon is held in conjunction with National Doctor’s Day.  Many noted physicians who serve the community with commitment and caring are nominated each year for the Doctor of Distinction Award. In honor of Dr. Murray, scholarship assistance in the medical field is being provided to students attending Palm Beach State College, Florida Atlantic University and, Lynn University through the Helen M. Babione Medical Scholarship Fund.
