Kick-off for The Haven’s “Day at The Races” raises $34,000

BOCA RATON — The Haven’s second annual “Day at The Races” kick-off event held at the home of honorary event co-chairs Derek and Lisa Vander Ploeg, raised more than $34,000 to support programs for foster youth age 9-17 who reside at The Haven, a group home founded in 1976 for adolescent boys who have been removed from abusive and neglectful homes and placed in protective care by the state.

To recognize their continuing and very generous support, The Haven honors the Vander Ploeg’s as this year’s honorary co-chairs for its “Haven Day at the Races”. They are serving with event chairs Lynda Levitsky and Marge Vukovich. As longtime supporters and benefactors of The Haven, the Vander Ploegs have contributed significantly to the renovation and restoration of The Haven’s recent cottage project, with Derek and his Boca Raton-based architecture and design firm, Vander Ploeg & Associates, guiding and advising the master planning efforts of The Haven.

To be held on April 11, early in the Kentucky Derby season, The Haven’s Derby Chic second annual “Day At The Races” will combine an elaborate lunch at Christine Lee’s, socializing, and live horse racing action at Gulfstream Park Race Track in Hallandale. With ladies donning the most interesting, elegant Derby hats, the event draws supporters from Palm Beach to Miami. There will be another pre-event reception at Taverna Kyma in Boca Raton on December 2, and a ladies wine tasting and Derby hat sale scheduled for January 10 at Hats Etcetera in Boca Raton.

Demonstrating the “family” dedication to The Haven’s mission at the kick-off event, The Vander Ploegs’ son Maxwell, age 17, opened the evening’s Run to the Races call-for-sponsors with a gift of $1,000 that he raised as part of his community service commitment at The Saint Andrews School.

Following Maxwell’s lead were Trifecta Sponsors: Mark Mileusnic of NCCI and Robin Trompeter. Daily Double Sponsors: Daszkal Bolton, LLP, Mark Butters of Butters Construction, Frank Frione of GFA International, Paul Mack of The Mack Group, Guy Fronstin, Esq., Seth Ellis of Ellis Hodes & Goldberg, P.L., and Tony Altmann of International Renewables Group/Energy IQ Team.

Underwriting Sponsors included Steven L. Pomeranz of Steven L. Pomeranz Financial Management, Kaye Communications, Maxwell Vander Ploeg, Rick Coffin of Camarco, LLC, Robert Long and Wendy Larsen, Neal and Karen Meany, William J. Berger, Richard Vezina, Don Stewart, and Deborah J. Robinson.

From its five-acre campus in Boca Raton, The Haven provides programs designed to foster the development of each young man’s self-esteem and independence. In a safe, loving and stable environment, the young men are taught the skills necessary for them to become self-sufficient and proud adults. The Haven, a 501(c)(3), is nationally accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA), and recently received its fifth-consecutive four-star rating from Charity Navigator, a national charity watchdog group.
