Palm Beach Business.com officially launches

Welcome to Palm Beach Business.com, Florida’s online, independent business and consumer newspaper. We intend to provide our readers with the best news coverage of business-related topics through our own reporting and through links to the top newspapers in the state and in the nation. We also will provide a host of links that will make this site useful as well as informative. Our goal is to tailor this site to meet the needs of our readers.

We can do this because we’re different. We’re written and edited by experienced journalists who know the South Florida business community, who’ve worked and lived here for decades. Our lives are here. We’re not staffed with transients looking to building a resume.

We understand business because we are business people as well as journalists. We have had to put together and execute a business plan. We’ve had to set a budget and find money to finance it, giving us a perspective that is rare among practicing journalists. We understand that business is in business to make money. At the same time, we are not tools of the business community.

We are independent; we have no corporate ties to Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Charlotte or any other city outside of Florida. We don’t have layers of corporate bureaucracy to fight in order to make changes or add new services. We intend to cover the business community like we live here, because we do.

We are fast. Unlike traditional newspapers that have hold back their best stories for the next day’s edition, we’ll give you the news pretty much as it happens.

We take a broader view of what constitutes business news. We will cover small businesses — the heart of Florida’s economy — as well as the Office Depots and the FPLs.

We will cover major issues. The elections, rising real estate costs, the insurance crisis, and good jobs are among the items high on our agenda.

We will not ignore working people and the issues that affect them. Workers do matter, and their voices should be heard.
We will cover politics as well as business, because they’re too closely aligned to treat them separately, as traditional newspapers do.

We cover, not ignore, the media. We have no vested interest in the circulation war between South Florida Sun Sentinel and The Palm Beach Post but it ranks among the most important, least-written business stories in the region. (Note to The Post: Yes, it is the South Florida Sun Sentinel.)

Our goal is to bring you the news with a sense of perspective, to not take ourselves too seriously and to have some fun as well.

We will not give you yesterday’s news today. We’ll leave that to traditional newspapers.

We will not waste space with self-absorbed columns or features about ourselves, as if we are the most fascinating people we know. We’re not.

We will not make fashion statements; that means no before-and-after makeovers, no advise on eyeliner, no silly trends.
What we do hope to do is build a community around this web site, to involve our readers, to give them a voice that a traditional newspaper can’t, or won’t.

We promise to change, to evolve, to grow, so we can serve you, the reader, better tomorrow than we have today.   So let’s get started.
