McEnroe defeats Cash in Delray ITC opener

DELRAY BEACH — John McEnroe’s return to the Delray Beach proved a successful one as he defeated Australian Pat Cash 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 as the Champions Tour portion of the International Tennis Championships began play Friday evening at the Delray Beach Tennis Center.
In an earlier match, defending champion Carlos Moya of Spain defeated Boca Raton’s Aaron Krickstein 6-4. 6-4.
McEnroe appeared shaky in the second set, as Cash consecutively broke his serve. Then McEnroe broke back only to get broken on his next serve. He disputed calls on several occasions, threw down his racket at one point and questioned his own play but never lost his famous temper.
However, McEnroe rallied in the tiebreaker to cruise past Cash in the tiebreaker.
McEnroe plays Sweden’s Mats Wilander in the late match Saturday night.
Saturday afternoon, Moya takes on the 2011 winner of the Champions tournament, Mark Philippoussis of Australia.
Meanwhile qualifying play begins in the ATP tournament.
Saturday’s schedule:
— ATP qualifying matches begin on courts 1,2,3 and 4 at 11 a.m.
— Moya takes on Philippoussis at 12:30 in the stadium.
— Wilander plays Cash not before 2:30.
— Philippoussis plays Krickstein at 6:30.
—McEnroe plays Wilander not before 8:30.
Notes: Mats Wilander will receive his Tennis Hall of Fame ring during a ceremony before his 8:30 match with with McEnroe. Christopher Clouser and Peggy Woolard of the International Hall of Fame and Delray tournament Director Mark Baron will make the presentation. Wilander was inducted into the Hall in 2002 but the rings for Hall of Fame members were not introduced until last year.
