DELRAY BEACH — Carlos Moya turned professional in 1995; Ivan Lendl retired from the tour in 1994.
On Tuesday, the two met in the finals of the Champions Tour event at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships. Moya won 6-4, 6-4. Lendl displayed some of the skill that made him one of the greatest players in tennis history, but in the end was no match for Moya, 17 years his junior.
“He played well,” Moya said of Lendl, afterward. “It’s a huge honor to play such a legend as Ivan. I wish at 52 I’m as fit as he is. He can play, still has his forehand.
“It was a strange feeling to see him across the net playing with me.”
Moya finished the Delray tournament undefeated in four matches; Lendl, a Vero Beach resident, finished 2-2, qualifying for the finals when Johan Kriek retired in his match against Mikael Pernsfor Monday.
Earlier in the day, Michael Chang beat Pernsfor to take third place.
A foot injury forced Moya to retire from the World Tour in 2010; He was ranked No. 1 on the Champions Tour in 2011. The competition on the Champions Tour is not as cut throat, for lack of a better term, as the World Tour but it still gives Moya the adrenalin rush he misses.
“This tour can give me this feeling.”
Ivan Lendl flashed some of the skills that made him a tennis great but in the end didn't have enough game against Carlos Moya.
