The power of social networking

By Tina L. Pugliese, APR, Pugliese Public Relations

tina puglieseOne of the most exciting things to happen to public relations is social media. It has opened up the opportunity for the industry’s professionals to do their job more directly, reaching influencers in ways never before possible, and extending our reach well beyond media.

Social media helps to build more new relationships, across a wider landscape and in a sustainable fashion never before possible. Everyone is busy and social media enables professionals to maintain ongoing, quality relationships with influencers, media, customers and partners regardless of where they are or how much time they have.

It is obvious that the marketing of today has changed. Newspapers are going Web only, Twitter and Facebook replacing postcards and phone calls, and potential clients now being the main target of your news releases as opposed to editors.

It is all changing and to do public relations today, you need to change with it. The good news is that it has never been easier. The bad news is you need to learn a new way to do things. Fortunately, there are tips that can make it easier and we will discuss a few.

First, no one can deny the power of social networking. What you have are more and more businesses networking and connecting with each other in ways never thought possible.  It is also more than just networking back and forth.

You can have chats, host events, get more publicity for your articles and news releases and even announce your seminars and radio shows. There are entire books written on this, so my recommendation is to get them.

Why struggle to find your way around when you can easily read the tips from those who know exactly what you need to succeed. Also, while you are getting your feet wet, do not jump in and start posting and selling. Sign up and remain quiet for a short time and read what others are posting.

Follow the leaders in your industry and take advantage of their knowledge and listen to what they are saying. Go to the sites they recommend and do the things they suggest. And if you have the opportunity to contribute and honestly have something of importance to say, do.
