Boca Raton man charged with fraud in corporate ID theft scam

By Palm Beach Business.com

FORT LAUDERDALE — A federal grand jury has indicted a Boca Raton businessman on 26 counts of mail fraud in connection with a corporate identity theft scheme that cost its victims millions of dollars in bogus shipping charges.

Rogerio Chaves Scotton of Boca Raton,  a Brazilian national also known as Roger Scotton, operated two websites, Brazil Express Import and and Sky Air Express that offered to ship merchandise to customers in Brazil and other countries at discount prices.

In order to get those cheap shipping rates, prosecutors allege that Scotton fraudulently created accounts with major shippers in the names of major corporations, including Target, Apple and WalMart, which he used to ship thousands of packages

When the shipping companies discovered the bogus accounts Scotton created, they would charge the legitimate corporate account owner. As a result, the shipping companies suffered losses in the millions because of Scotton’s activities.

If convicted, Scotton faces a maximum of 20 years for each count of mail fraud.
